Question:
My car will not start?
Answer:
Most cars after 1996, have immobilisers, so this could be malfunctioning. Check via your handbook that the immobiliser is behaving correctly, i.e. the immobiliser warning light is doing what it should. Most should go out with ignition on or on the starting position.

Question:
I’ve fitted a new battery to my car, but it has discharged all its power, the same as the last one.
Answer:
Batteries discharging (going flat) are caused by:

Internal fault in the battery
Not charging correctly
It is discharging current when the ignition is switched off.

Common things to check are:

The boot/glove box lights are going off
Poor battery connections
Loose fan belt
Ignition light (battery warning light on bright or bright – both normally indicate a fault)

Question:
My car alarm is going off for no apparent reason. (False alarming)
Answer:
First of all check the alarm handbook. Most modern alarms have a self check diagnostic unit to tell you which sensor circuit is causing the false alarm. If this doesn’t give you the answer:

Check the condition of the door, boot & bonnet switches
Check the condition of the air sensors in the car
Check the operation of the interior lights
Another probable cause of false alarming is water ingression into the siren, usually located under the bonnet – check the condition of the wiring to the siren

Question:
My car is blowing fuses. I’ve tried a bigger fuse, but it blows that fuse as well!
Answer:
STOP THERE
On no account replace a fuse with one of a higher rating. Fusing is there to protect the wiring of the car from over heating due to excess current being drawn. Fuses and the wiring are designed together – for your safety!

For example:
If a short circuit (blowing fuse) exists on the left hand side, tail light. First check the blubs are OK and correct. Check the condition of the lamp fittings, don’t forget the number plate, panel and dash lights. Cigar lighter illumination and radio light are also common failures on this circuit.
